Classroom Fun!
As a middle school teacher, I know students need to constantly be engaged in their learning. With mathematics, the topics can often be considered boring and not fun for students to learn. However, in my classroom, I strive to include hands-on activities and explorations so that students are in control of their own learning, and are constantly engaged in the subject I am teaching!
Group Activities
|
Students playing "combining like terms uno" to practice how like and unlike terms go together. |
Grade 6 Students completing a matching activity where they match an algebraic equation with its answer. The activity is just like the memory game where students pick two cards at a time and if they match they can keep the cards and continue flipping. If they do not match, they lose their turn. |

Foldables and explorations

m&m ratio exploration

Project Based Assessments
Instead of just simple tests and quizzes, I supplement my assessments with mini projects and activities. Students work in cooperative groups to solve a problem and explain their process using critical thinking skills.
|
In the pictures to the left, grade 8 students are demonstrating their knowledge of the parts of a Distance vs. Time graph. They had to match each graph with its counterpart table and story to create a complete set. Once all the sets are matched, they created a poster displaying the matches and explaining why each part of the set is a match. |
This group of photos shes grade 6 students working on their Survey Project. This project is used as an alternative to a test following our unit on Data Analysis. The project entails many parts, all of which are combined in a poster that each group eventually presents to the class. The students worked in groups of their choosing and had to follow the followng steps:
Students were graded both on accuracy and creativity of their posters as well as their class presentation. |
